An inheritance represents more than money. Thoughtful financial planning can help preserve a loved one’s legacy while supporting your own values and goals.

How to avoid costly mistakes, invest an inheritance wisely, and build a long-term financial strategy.

By Peter Catalano, ChFC®, CLU® | Catalano Financial

Receiving a significant inheritance can change your financial circumstances almost overnight. It may create opportunities you never expected, but it can also bring uncertainty, especially when the inheritance follows the loss of someone you love.

You may wonder whether to invest the money immediately, pay off your mortgage, change your retirement plans, or simply leave everything where it is until you understand your options. With so many decisions to consider, it’s understandable to worry about making a mistake.

At Catalano Financial, an independent Registered Investment Adviser based in The Woodlands, Texas, we help individuals and families turn significant financial changes into thoughtful, long-term plans. Our first priority isn’t deciding which investments to purchase. It’s understanding what this inheritance means for your life.

Who Near The Woodlands Can Help You Invest an Inheritance Wisely?

If you’ve inherited a substantial amount of money, working with an experienced financial advisor can help you understand your options and avoid making decisions in isolation.

Peter Catalano, ChFC®, CLU®, has worked in financial services since 1992. Through Catalano Financial, he helps clients organize their financial lives, develop investment strategies, plan for retirement, and coordinate important decisions with their other professional advisors.

An inheritance often introduces new responsibilities alongside existing investments, retirement accounts, insurance policies, and family obligations. Rather than treating the inheritance as a separate pool of money, we look at how it fits into your entire financial picture.

You don’t need to make every decision immediately. In many situations, the most productive first step is to protect the assets, understand what you’ve received, and give yourself time to establish a plan.

Your First Step: Revisit Your Values and Build a Financial Roadmap

At Catalano Financial, our planning philosophy follows a simple progression: Values → Goals → Money.

An inheritance may change what’s financially possible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your priorities have changed. Or perhaps they have. You may now be able to retire earlier, help your children purchase homes, support a cause that’s important to you, or create financial security that previously seemed out of reach.

Before making investment decisions, it’s worth asking whether these new opportunities align with what matters most to you.

Our Financial Roadmap Meeting begins with that conversation. We explore your values, understand your current financial circumstances, and identify the goals you want your money to support. From there, we can begin organizing the financial decisions that deserve attention.

An inheritance should support the life you want to live. Your financial plan helps give that money a purpose.

Understand What You’ve Inherited Before Deciding What to Invest

Not all inheritances are treated the same way. The type of asset you receive can affect your taxes, access to the money, and investment decisions.

If you inherit cash, the immediate questions may involve where to hold it safely, how much to retain for near-term needs, and how to invest the remainder. If you inherit stocks or other investments in a taxable brokerage account, you may receive an adjusted tax basis based on the property’s value at the date of death, subject to applicable rules and exceptions.

Inherited retirement accounts require particular attention. Traditional IRAs may involve taxable distributions, and many non-spouse beneficiaries are subject to a ten-year distribution rule, although exceptions and additional requirements can apply. Inherited Roth IRAs have their own distribution rules, even when qualified withdrawals are income-tax-free.

Real estate, business interests, and other inherited property introduce additional considerations, including valuation, liquidity, ownership, and potential ongoing expenses.

Before selling assets, transferring accounts, or withdrawing retirement funds, it’s important to understand the consequences. We help clients evaluate these financial decisions while coordinating tax questions with their CPA and legal matters with their estate attorney.

How Should You Invest a Significant Inheritance?

The appropriate investment strategy depends on what you want the inheritance to accomplish and when you’ll need the money.

Someone who expects to retire in three years may approach an inheritance differently from someone planning for retirement twenty years away. A family that needs additional monthly income may have different priorities from someone who wants to preserve wealth for future generations.

We begin by considering immediate cash needs, emergency reserves, existing debt, investment time horizons, and your ability and willingness to accept market risk. These factors help determine how much of the inheritance may be appropriate for long-term investing and how much should remain accessible.

For clients who want professional investment management, Catalano Financial develops diversified investment strategies based on their financial circumstances and objectives. Our approach considers investment costs, portfolio allocation, risk, ongoing monitoring, and how the portfolio fits into the broader financial plan.

The objective isn’t simply to invest a large sum of money. It’s to create a strategy you can understand and maintain as your life changes.

How Do Financial Planning and Investment Management Work Together?

Investing an inheritance is often only one part of the decision.

A substantial inheritance may affect retirement income planning, insurance needs, beneficiary designations, estate arrangements, and the coordination of assets held across different financial institutions. It may also change how much investment risk you need to take.

Our Financial Roadmap helps establish your direction. Comprehensive Financial Planning can then develop that direction into a more detailed strategy, while Strategic Portfolio Management provides ongoing oversight of investments when appropriate.

For clients whose financial lives require broader ongoing guidance, Strategic Wealth Partnership brings financial planning, investment management, and professional coordination together. We help clients keep their financial decisions organized and work alongside their existing CPAs, attorneys, and other professionals within the scope of our engagement.

The right relationship depends on your needs. Not everyone who receives an inheritance requires ongoing wealth management, and we want clients to understand their options before deciding how to proceed.

Our Financial Roadmap and Comprehensive Financial Planning engagements are separate services. The specific services, fees, minimums, and any applicable credits are explained before an engagement begins.

Is Catalano Financial a Fee-Only Financial Advisor?

Catalano Financial is an independent Registered Investment Adviser. When providing investment advisory services, we act as a fiduciary and charge disclosed planning or asset-based advisory fees.

However, we do not describe our practice as strictly fee-only because Peter Catalano is also licensed to offer insurance products and may receive commissions from insurance carriers when clients choose to purchase coverage through him. Those commissions are separate from advisory fees and create a potential conflict of interest, which we disclose.

Clients are not required to purchase insurance products through us to receive financial planning or investment advisory services.

When evaluating any financial advisor, we encourage you to ask how they are compensated, what services are included, and how potential conflicts of interest are addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Have to Invest My Entire Inheritance Right Away?

No. Depending on your circumstances, it may be appropriate to hold funds in suitable cash or short-term instruments while you evaluate your financial needs and investment strategy. The important consideration is to understand your available options and the risks of both investing and remaining in cash for an extended period.

Should I Pay Off My Mortgage With an Inheritance?

That depends on your mortgage rate, available liquidity, tax considerations, retirement needs, and personal preferences. Paying off debt can provide peace of mind, but it may not be the best use of every inherited dollar. This decision should be considered within your broader financial plan.

Are Inheritances Taxable?

Inheritances are generally not subject to federal income tax simply because you receive them. However, inherited retirement account distributions, income generated by inherited assets, capital gains after inheritance, and certain other circumstances may create tax obligations. Estate or inheritance taxes may also apply depending on the estate and relevant jurisdiction.

What Happens During the First Financial Roadmap Meeting?

We begin by discussing your values, goals, and current financial circumstances. We’ll talk about what you’ve inherited, what concerns you most, and what you want the money to accomplish. From there, we identify priorities and determine whether additional planning or investment management would be helpful.

Do You Only Work With Clients in The Woodlands?

No. The Woodlands is our home base, and we primarily serve clients throughout the greater Houston area and Texas. We may also work with clients in other states virtually where permitted under applicable registration requirements.

An Inheritance Can Change Your Finances. Your Values Should Guide What Happens Next.

Receiving an inheritance may create opportunities to improve your financial security, support your family, or pursue goals that once seemed out of reach. But having more money doesn’t automatically make financial decisions easier.

You deserve the time and guidance to understand what you’ve received, consider your options, and develop a strategy that reflects what matters most to you.

At Catalano Financial, we begin with your values, clarify your goals, and then determine how your money can support them.
